The Chat, newspaper of Flatbush, 10 December 1927; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Van Wicklen married 60 years ago last Monday (which was Dec. 5th). Reside South Main St., Freeport. He is 84 and she 77, nee Mary Forbell, both born East New York (part of New Lots), families moved to Jamaica where they were married. he was for some years Keeper of the Coast Guard Light at Long Beach, 4 children and 5 grandchildren. At 1850 Census, Jacob Lott Van Wicklin was living in Flatbush, occupation miller, real estate $5,000 (next to brother John). 
1870 he was in Hempstead, occupation marketman, real estate $4,000, personal $2,000. 1880 he was of New Lots, age 66, Cynthia, 57, Richard, 31, Ellen, 28 (wife of Richard), David 28, Ida 30 (wife of David), Ida M. 29 (dau. of Jacob), David 10, Isaac 8, Richard 2 (last three all sons of Richard). In 1900 Cynthia was living in East Rockaway, Town of Hempstead, enumeration dist. 703, sheet 6, with daughter Ida M. Abrams.

Missing person? Cypress Hills plot of Richard L. VW also holds Jessie Brown Van Wicklen (1889-1929), not clear who she is, but from location of her grave she is probably connected to the Richard^7 L. Van Wicklen family. (note in 15 July 2000 letter from Harry Macy, Jr.)

Brooklyn Eagle, 19 July, 1899, page 7: Van Wicklen-Bedell - Freeport, L.I., July 15 - The announcement was made today that Miss Mamie Bedell, daughter of Vincent Bedell of Rockville Center and Whitney Van Wicklen of this village were quietly married in Brooklyn last Wednesday. Mr. Van Wicklen is the son of Captain Richard Van Wicklen of the Long Beach Life Saving Station. (Richard^7 Van Wicklen is listed above as Captain of this Long Beach Station, however, he does not have a son named Whitney. Perhaps, Richard^8 was also a Captain and Whitney is an unidentified son of Richard^8...or ...perhaps Whitney is a middle name that one of Richard^7s sons went by.)

It is about 6 feet long and sixteen inches in diameter. Captain Van Wicklen of the Life Saving Station thinks it is the rib of a mastodon...

1900 US Census for E. Rockaway, Nassau, NY lists Richard Van Wicklen, 54, b. Sept 1843, Keeper, U.S.L.S.S., with wife Mary E., 45, and sons, Richard, Jr., 22, single, plumber, and Alvin F., son, 12, at school. All are b. NY with parents b. NY.

1910 US Census for District 13, Hempstead, Nassau, NY lists Richard Van Wicklen, 66, sailor (Captain), first marriage-43 years, with Mary E., 59, M1-43, and Alvin, 21, plumber. All b. NY

WWI Registration Card (1917-1918) for Alvin Forbell Van Wicklen, Front St., E. Rockaway, NY was b. 11 May 1888, East Rockaway, NY. He was a plumber employed by Whitney Van Wicklen of Freeport, NY. He was single and described as tall, medium build with brown eyes and dark brown hair, and balding.

Van Wicklen, b. 31 December 1892 and d. 6 Jan 1984, Palm Beach, FL (courtesy, Cheryl Viger in 8 Jan 2003 email) In 27August 2014 email, Ruth Harvey sent a photo of Serena Van Wicklen's gravestone and it is inscribed with a birth year of 1893 which is at odds with the Florida Death index.
